5 things you need to know about new Manchester United signing Diogo Dalot
5)Still a teenager
Amidst all the spotlight, it might be easier to forget that United have after all signed a teenager. While expectations would be that Fred hits the ground running, the expectations need to be more mild with Dalot, who has not yet reached his 20s. He turned 19 in March and has just 8 senior appearances to his name. He only debuted with Porto in Oct of last season and even then, spent a majority with the B-team. The Braga born defender might have made the move too early but excuse him if he does not set the world alight in his first season at Old Trafford.
4) Not a certain starter
This is perhaps the biggest thought to be kept in mind with Dalot. The youngster barely has any senior level experience and has been signed by one of the biggest clubs in the world on the back off just 8 appearances in his breakthrough season. Potential is clearly what United have been looking at with Dalot but quotes like he is the best full back in his age group does not help either. A proper transition plan is needed if Dalot is to develop into the player United have spent 20 million on despite his inexperience.
3) International experience
Perhaps his international experience is where United’s scouts got to learn about him. While relatively not featuring in many games at the club level, Dalot has already made more than 50 appearances for the youth sides. He has featured for Portugal from the age when he was eligible for U-15 team. Recently, he was a part of the U-17 squad that won the European Championship. Dalot scored the only goal in the final while also converted from the spot in the penalty shootout.
2) Attack minded
For the modern day full back, having an attack minded philosophy is imperative. Dalot follows in the trend with his goal scoring instincts. The Portuguese ended the Youth league 2017/18 with two goals in just 5 games while ending the season with 4 goals in all competitions. He also laid on eight assists, three of which came for the senior side in the Premeiraliga. Given attack is all United fans crave for, Dalot will surely excite the Old Trafford faithful with his attacking instincts.
As important as it is to be attack minded, equally important is the ability to play in different positions. It is another department where Dalot has shown signs of brilliance. The young teenager who primarily plays as a right back also featured as a left-back when Porto came up against Liverpool’s explosive front three. Dalot did incredibly well for his age as Porto contained Liverpool’s attack throughout the 90 minutes. For Porto B, Dalot has also played as a right and left sided winger, an asset which will surely prove valuable for Mourinho’s side.
