5 things you need to know about new Manchester United signing Fred
From the streets of Brazil
Fred was born and brought up in Belo Horizante, one of Brazil’s busiest and famous towns known for their exquisite lifestyle and of course football. Fred graduated from the youth system of Atletico Mineiro but made his professional debut in the colours of Internacional. After two fruitful years he made a move to Ukraine and plied his trade for Shakhtar Donetsk, where he remained for 5 years before moving to Manchester United.
Fred isn’t a dynamic winger or a swashbuckling no 10 but he idolized Ronaldinho while growing up. Fred is predominantly left footed but can hit them long with his other foot as well. A fast and tenacious midfielder, Fred may not bamboozle the defence as his idol did, but he has honed the techniques of European football keeping the Brazilian flair intact.
Has a dope case against his name
Not a pretty or proud thing to have by your name, but Fred was tested positive for a banned substance known as Diuretic Hydrocholorothiazide. He was tested positive in the ongoing Copa America 2015. His official ban started from March 2017 and ended by July 2017. He was originally sentenced for a ban of 2 years requested by the World Anti-Doping Agency while CONMEBOL imposed a one-year ban. It is needless to say Fred had to serve only 4 months of his ban and had participated in all the matches before that.
A fast and tenacious midfielder
Fred is left footed and is deadly from set pieces, which will eventually allow Mourinho with some option. Like any skilful southpaw, Fred is capable enough of hitting curling strikes from distance and added to that is his Brazilian finesse. Deadly on the break, Fred has the capability of breaking down attacks and counter with his notable speed. His emergence on the United midfield will help Pogba to remain in his zone and exchange passes.
Fred’s agent Gilberto Silva
Fred’s agent is 2002 World Cup winner Gilberto Silva. A gem of a midfielder at his prime, Gilberto considers himself as Fred’s mentor first and then an agent. Most of Fred’s decisions are overviewed by Gilberto and his signing for Manchester United does not come as a surprise as he spent his best years with Arsenal and knows about the core of English football.
