Footballers with most assists in European football this season
5) Leroy Sane (Manchester City) 11 assists in 25 games
The German has stood up this season for the Citizens after taking his time last season to settle in the English league. This season has been another story. Sane has become City’s first choice left winger and has formed a fantastic trio with Sterling and Aguero. Given his tender age, Sane’s figures have been appalling. With 11 assists and 12 goals, Sane is one of the first on Pep Guardiola’s starting XI. City’s chances in the champions league are heavily reliant on the young German, who by the looks of it, is set to be a strong BallonD’or contender in the future.
4) Lionel Messi (Barcelona) 12 assists in 28 games
Unlike previous seasons, Messi has played deeper than ever for Barcelona. With Iniesta now in the twilight of his career and Neymar no more at the club after his acrimonious departure to PSG, there were serious doubts about Barca’s chances this season. Here we are though at the business end of the season and the Catalans are yet to face a defeat. At the heart of their success as been the little Argentine magician. 25 goals and 11 assists to his name, Messi leads both the scoring and assists charts. He looks an even better player from the deep with his incredible vision and sublime passing range.
3)Philipp Max (Augsburg) 13 assists in 27 games
Perhaps the most surprising name on the list is Augsburg’s Philipp Max, who with 13 assists leads the charts in the Bundesliga. The feat is an incredible one considering the multitude of talent in the German league, where the likes of Gotze, Muller and James Rodriguez ply their trade. The Augsburg defender has been on point with his crossing this season, making crucial overlapping runs. His fine delivery has even earned him the set piece duty, which has significantly contributed to Augsburg’s goal tally this season.
2)Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) 14 assists in 30 games
By far City’s best player this season has been the majestic Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian has taken his game to a whole new level this season, with his impressive work rate. Playing much deeper than he is accustomed to, De Bruyne has the task of picking out runs of Sane and Sterling ahead of him, and the Belgian has done that with grace. Some of his crosses and through balls have been magical to say the least, which in turn has drawn comparisons with the legendary David Beckham. Pep Guardiola’s side will be hoping for some more magic as City chase a treble.
1) Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain) 15 assists in 20 games
With 28 goals and 19 assists to his name, Neymar has seemingly justified the heavy transfer fee PSG paid to Barca for his signature. While the football world will surely judge Neymar on European success with PSG, the numbers cannot simplybe ignored. So much so, that the French Ligue at times seems below Neymar’s levels. Moreover, there have been reports that the Brazilian feels that he made a mistake moving to Ligue 1. Nevertheless, he leads the assists charts for the season in Europe with 15 assists to his name.
