5) John Terry and Rio Ferdinand
One of the prime reasons behind England’s golden generation’s failure was their inability to gel together as a team. Part of it was also down to the lack of team spirit in the camp as cited by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand himself admitted that he did not share a harmonious relationship with Lampard, who was also his teammate back at West Ham while he also did not see eye to eye with Gerrard due to the arch rivalry between Liverpool and Man United. But for Ferdinand, the biggest of all those was his relationship with then captain John Terry, whose involvement in the racism case with Rio’s brother, Antoine, virtually ended what was remaining of their relationship. Ferdinand also openly spoke about the fact that the duo were yet to talk after the incident.
4) Alvaro Arbeloa and Gerard Pique
The history of Pique’s relationship with Real Madrid has been nothing less than fractious. Pique has always been the flagbearer of Barca’s resistance against Real Madrid. He has never been afraid of speaking up against Real and the happenings at their club. One such incident took place when Real fielded an ineligible player in a Copa Del Ray tie to which Pique was quick to smirk at. Alvaro Arbeloa was one of the players firmly against Pique and his wrong doings. When Arbeloa labelled Pique as his friend, Pique was quick to shrug off any such suggestion claiming that Arbeloa was just someone he knew.
3) Robert Lewandowski and Jakub Blaszczykowski
It is worth noting that Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski were not only teammates on the international duty but were also teammates at Borussia Dortmund. The duo were prominent figures in Jurgen Klopp’s Bundesliga title winning side of 2011/12. However, despite all the success on the pitch, the duo never saw eye to eye whilst at Dortmund. Their relationship had taken a hit due to their separate political ideologies while the captaincy issue for the national team further stirred the already fractious relationship. Kuba was reportedly not even picked for duty in order to maintain the harmony in the dressing room. Kuba was also the only player from the national team who was not invited in the Bayern star’s wedding.
2) Mauro Icardi and Maxi Lopez
Part of the hate for Mauro Icardi around the football world arises from his relationship with Maxi Lopez which framed his image as the bad boy. Once the best of friends, Icardi and Lopez had a breakdown after Icardi married Lopez’s wife. In addition, Icardi also mocked Lopez by putting pictures of him with Lopez’s kids on social media. The duo have always been up for a fight on social media ever since. The match between Sampdoria and Inter was even touted as the Wanda derby with reference to Wanda who is Icardi’s wife and agent and also Lopez’s ex.
1) Gokhan Tore and Hakan Calhanoglu, Omer Toprak
The story of the quarrel between three of Turkey’s star footballers is as movie like as it gets. The incident was due to Toprak’s friend who had an affair with Tore’s girlfriend and when Toprak’s friend was staying with Toprak and Calhanoglu, Tore stormed int the room and pulled a gun from his jacket. Since then, Calhanoglu and Tore barely spoke to each other and understandably so. However, the incident nearly marked the end of the trio’s international career. Presently though, they have reconciled.
