Pep Guardiola has collected 21 pieces of silverware during his reign at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but he finished trophyless after his first season in charge of Manchester City. Manchester City were eliminated from the Champions League round of 16 and finished only in third spot in the Premier League table. Furthermore, Guardiola’s men were beaten by Manchester United in the EFL and by Arsenal in the FA Cup Semi-finals.
The club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has piled on the pressure for next season by saying that he wants Pep Guardiola to pull off a quadruple of major trophies. In order for this performance to be achieved, City have given Pep a £300 million transfer war chest to strengthen the squad. Pep has already spent £43m on Monaco’s playmaker Bernardo Silva and are very close wrapping up a complicated transfer for Benfica goalkeeper Ederson. He is set to become the most expensive goalkeeper of all time after the Citizens agreed a deal in excess of £35m. Furthermore, Alexis Sanchez, Benjamin Mendy, Leonardo Bonucci, Kyle Walker and Virgil van Dijk have all been linked with a move to Manchester City.
Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, Willy Caballero, Jesus Navas and Pablo Zabaleta have all been released, but Yaya Toure has been told to stay and he is very close to sign a new one-year deal.
