- Marcos Alonso:
It is true that the Spaniard has been effective for Antonio Conte on the left side of the pitch but it is also true that Alonso has struggled with consistency. On his day, Alonso is a wonderful contributor both in the attack and in the defense. But it is a stretch to say that he has been the best left-back this season in the league. Left backs like Ben Davies and Ashley Young have been equally effective as Alonso was. In fact, make-shift left backs like Young and Fabian Delph have sometimes performed better than the Spaniard. Ben Davies has been among goals and assists this season and maybe he was a better candidate to replace Alonso in the PFA team of the year.
- Christian Eriksen:
There is no doubt that the Danish midfielder has been a great influence in the Spurs line up. He has been the key playmaker for the North London side but that being said, a number of players too have equally done well. Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been a massive contributor in creating the chances for City. He has been phenomenal with his play making as he stepped up every time Pep Guardiola needed him too. Also, central midfielder Fernandinho has done amazingly well this season. His sturdy defensive abilities have been a boon for City as it has given the freedom to their attacking players to all guns blazing. Eriksen deserves credit for what he has done at Spurs but surely not more than what De Bruyne and Fernandinho have done for City.
- Sergio Aguero:
The Argentine has consistently been superb for Manchester City ever since he signed for them. He has been amongst the goals almost every season but surprisingly this season is the first time that he is included in the PFA Team of the Year and that too as a left forward. Speaking of left forwards, Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane too have been very impressive this season. Also, if a striker was to be placed on the left side in the PFA team of the year, Firmino surely deserved a place there. The Brazilian has shown his abilities in front of the goal this season when many wrote him off as a striker. Also, he has helped immensely to create and let Salah and Mane be more involved in goals to help Liverpool. It is not that Aguero doesn’t deserve a place but there were other players who probably deserved a place too.
